 | | Kazuri Beads - African Ceramic Jewellery Kenya's famous Kazuri beads.
Kazuri ceramic beads are a new range of necklaces, chokers and earrings we are featuring on our site. These handmade and hand painted ethnic beads are crafted into colourful designs at the Kazuri workshop on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya.
Every single bead is shaped by hand before it is polished and kiln fired. The hardened ceramic beads are then painted by hand and fired for a second time before being strung as a necklace or bracelet by one of the local women employed by Kazuri.
The ceramic jewellery produced in the Kazuri workshop reflects the kaleidoscopic colours of Africa. You will find greens, greys, browns, ochres, reds and yellow beads in many different styles and combinations. We have selected a range of necklaces, chokers and earrings that are perfect for special occasions or every-day wear.
Kazuri was founded in 1975 by Lady Susan Wood. She saw that many of the local women in villages around Nairobi were nearly destitute and, together with two Kikuyu women, organised a ceramic workshop to teach them jewellery making skills.
From its modest beginnings as a small handicraft enterprise, Kazuri Beads has expanded its range of ceramic jewellery and pottery and now employs around 150 workers. The company is a member of the International Federation for Alternative Trade (IFAT) and imports into the UK are under the rules of the British Association of Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS).
